Playing Dress Up with Dolls!

My little Lucy loves dolls.  Like a lot of little girls she gives them a lot of attention.  She hauls them around the house, feeding them, bathing them, and even putting them down for a nap.

Playing Dress Up With Dolls!- Ideas for making matching girl and doll fairy dress up clothes.

When I came across mini wings (for pets) at Halloween I picked up a pair for her doll.  Lucy was a butterfly for Halloween, so I thought it would be fun to see her reaction to dressing up with her doll.  At not-yet-two, she has not discovered dress up play yet.  I have older children, so I know we are on the edge of dress up play.  We have a little dress up bin that  she will soon discover, and like her older siblings, enjoy hours of dress up play!

I wanted to share a few things I found and share a few things I altered to make a simple matching dress up set for girls and dolls.

Today Lucy is modeling with grandma’s Bitty Twin but this little set would work with many kids of dolls.

Let’s start with the wings.  Lucy is wearing a pair of $1 wings.  These came from Walmart before Halloween.  I also have a pair from the Dollar Store.  They are pretty common.

Here are the wings for the doll.  They were sold as a pet costume before Halloween.  These are a fun find but are not very common.

I have also made doll wings by resizing the $1 wings.  I cut the wire, reshaped it, and re-stretched the nylon over it.  To keep the cut wire ends from poking out, I cut strips of felt and ran it over the wire edges of the wings.

You could also make a simple pair of wings from craft foam and paper like I made here.

The skirt for Lucy and the doll are both simple $1 tutu’s.  I layered 2 on Lucy to make it a little more full.

For the doll’s skirt I altered the same $1 tutu to fit the doll.  Tutus are really simple to make.  I will show you a little more about making or altering them soon!

I think the wings and tutu are the cutest part of this dress up set!

I came across matching onesies and decided to make the whole outfit match.  If you want to make this for an older child it would be just as cute to alter a white onesie for the doll and have a white t-shirt and leggings for the older child.

Lucy is in size 24m so it was easy to find matching onesies.  The little onesie is a premie size.  It was still a little long so I altered it to fit the doll.  I took pictures of the altering process and I will show you how I did it soon!

Matching shirts

That’s an overview of the different parts that make up this little matching dress up set.  Next time I will show you how to make a simple tutu (or alter one!) and how to alter a premie size onesie for your doll!

  1. I love this Anna! Elena was really into Gracia’s dolls today; maybe she and Lucy will enjoy playing dress up with dolls together…

  2. So Cute! Anna, You are a crafting genius! Can you make it for the 18 inch dolls by leaving the onsie full? I have sevral premie fashions i use for them.

    1. Ella, this would work for any age! I came upon a few things that worked for my younger daughters age. Keep your eye out for options that would work to make dress up clothes for girls and dolls! You could sew something or buy two of the same thing and alter or remake one of them to fit dolls!
