Knit fabric is great for fashionable and modern doll clothes. Since knit fabric stretches there are some different things to know to have success sewing it.
Today I wanted to give you a look at the basic stitches to use on knit fabric.
Let’s look at four stitches for sewing knit fabric (from left to right). Test the stitches on your fabric before beginning a project.
- Straight Stitch: It has no stretch so it is not a typical stitch for knits. It’s still used once in a while for special circumstances. Try lengthening the stitch for sewing on knits.
- Regular Zigzag Stitch: This is the go-to stitch for knit fabric. It has a lot of stretch.
- Narrow, Long Zigzag Stitch: This is a nice subtle stitch for the hemlines on knit fabric. It is only for situations that need low stretch.
- Double Needle Stitch: This is a neat and tidy looking stitch with a lot of stretch.
After you stitch on knits press with an iron. It really makes a difference! Above is before and below is after pressing.
Experiment with these stitches on your knit fabric. If you test the stitches on a scrap of fabric you will get an idea how it will work with your fabric and project. Happy Sewing!
