This little mesh bag is the product of a delightful discovery. I can’t wait to show you! In fact I had everything ready to post and realized I needed one last picture to really show you the discovery. I grabbed the camera and got one last shot. While it’s uploading I’ll tell you a little more about this doll size mesh sports bag!
It is deceiving how much you can fit into this little mesh bag. It is stretchy and expandable. Our doll, Morgan, loaded up both her soccer ball and water bottle.
With a ribbon on the side it easily hangs over one shoulder. Duck tape finishes off the seams and makes this a super easy and quick no-sew project!
The upload is completed. Let me go grab the picture…drum roll please…
Ta-Da! This delightful discovery came when I was reaching for an apple in the fridge. I noticed the delightful pink color of the mesh bag holding the apples. It definitely called out to be something adorably doll sized! Now I have a little stash of pink mesh. I love repurposing! It’s like making something from nothing or I guess in this case something from would-be trash. Save the world one doll craft at a time! 🙂
Let’s not delay any longer! Let me show you all the how-to’s of the project so you can make one too!
Supplies:
- mesh (The kind you find on the fruits and vegetables in the produce section. I’ve seen green, red, yellow, and now pink!)
- duck tape
- scissors
Cut the mesh into a strip 4″ x10″. I wanted to show you the difference between the strip on the left and the final strip on the right (You’ll have to ignore the tape, though.:)). See how garbley the edge is on the left? It’s no good for getting a flat seam. After the strip has been trimmed you can see by the picture on the right, how it looks without the bumpy and garbley edge (on the left).
I also need to mention the stretch factor of this mesh. It is quite stretchy and depending on how you pull it, it can distort the shape. Pull it all the same direction before you trim and pull it again if it gets misshaped.
With 2 pieces of duck tape that are 7/8″ wide, we are going to seal each end of our piece of mesh. Lay the edge of the mesh halfway on one piece of duck tape. It does not have to be super even, as you may notice in the top picture. It is important though that you catch the ends of this raw edge in the sticky tape. Fold the tape in half matching the edges as you fold. Press it well with a finger running over the tape.
Hey ignore the garble edge on these photos (Did you notice?). As noted above I found the garble edge doesn’t work! Most important is the you see how the tape on the ends goes on!
Take the two duct tape ends. Fold the mesh in half overlapping the duck tape one over the other.
Cut 2 pieces of duck tape 3/4″ x 5″. With this tape we are going to seal the edges and make it into a bag. Place a strip of tape the length of the mesh bag. Take care to catch all of the raw ends in the tape. Fold the tape over, matching up the edges.
Starting in the middle on one side, thread a piece of 1/8″ ribbon through the mesh, just below the duck tape. Continue all the way around the top of the mesh bag until you are back where you started, in the middle of one side. With this ribbon we’ll be able to cinch up the bag.
Now cut a length of ribbon 6 1/4″. With a little strip of duck tape, attach it to the top and bottom edge of the bag.
Fill this doll size mesh bag with doll size athletic gear. Pull the threaded ribbon ends, cinch up the bag, and tie it in a bow.
Throw it over her shoulder and she’s off to her big game!
Pink mesh inspired this little sports bag but don’t pass up the other colors that it comes in (holding your produce)! I noticed last night a nice green one on my avocados. It is going to be just right to make a bag for the boy dolls around here!
Just in case you are interested here are a few more details from today’s post.
- Doll: Morgan is AG#25
- Outfit: She is wearing a Springfield Collection Soccer Outfit. Hairband tutorial is here. Water bottle is from My Life As (Walmart’s 18″ doll line).
And I guess today’s mantra fits appropriately.
Repurpose and save the world, one doll craft at a time! 🙂
