Are you ready to add some patriotic pizzaz to your dolls’ wardrobe?
You could even make matching “fireworks” headbands to really add sparkle to your day!
This is a quick and fun project, so make a few, and add a fun splash to you and your dolls wardrobe!
Let’s get started!
Here’s what you’ll need:
- lightweight knit fabric
- matching felt
- matching thread
- cardstock paper
- thin elastic
- hot glue gun
- sewing machine
I used this red, sparkly, lightweight knit fabric. It was actually a dress that I picked up at a thrift store, you know the one that sells stuff by the pound? Pretty awesome for repurposing. You scan the bins for fabric that catches your eye, with little care for the size, or whether there is a little tear here or a stain there. Especially when you are sewing for dolls. Their clothes are so small and you can just cut around those tears and stains! Yipee!
It’s true, red fireworks are fun, but really this would work with a variety of fabrics and colors. So be creative, use what you have, and have fun!
Okay, now let’s really get started! Cut a few strips. The larger the head you are making it for, the wider the strip. Around 1/4″ for dolls, 1/2″ for babies, and 3/4″ for child/adult.
Wrap the strips around a piece of cardstock. We are basically making a pom-pom, if you’ve done that before.
Gently pull fabric off of cardstock, holding the bundle together.
With a piece of matching thread, wind it around the middle of your fabric bundle.
See, nice and bundled up!
Cut a felt circle. Attach your fabric bundle to it by sewing right down the middle where you wound it together.
Clip through the folds of the strips to transform it into a….
exploding, festive firework!
Now to make it into a headband!
I used this elastic.
It was in the jewelry section. I like how thin it is. I love the sparkly colors it comes in. But really, to be honest, the lovely sparkly colors don’t matter much on this project. It really just “disappears”, letting your firework poof shine through!
Try the elastic around the head you are making it for and cut. I did mine a tad larger and overlapped it like this. (FYI- now pictured is the child/adult size)
Really, this is probably unnecessary, it just creates confusion on getting just the right size. So, just cut it to fit and bring the two ends together on the back of your felt circle. Easier, better, smarter!:)
Run the hot glue right over the elastic and around the felt. Place a second felt circle on top. Work quickly so that the glue doesn’t set up to fast!:)
Phew you made it. I mean Who-Hoo you made it! Take a moment to admire your spunky, little poof creation!
Now experiment! Make a couple sizes on one headband.
Add another one to a shirt or dress. It’s easy and fun!:)
Seasonal stuff for your doll is oh so fun!
Now, I better try one on. It’s too cute to pass up! Wrap the elastic around your bun. It’s definitely not just for dolls this time!
