Sorry for any confusion with this post. It was published accidentally before it was ready last week, so sorry if you saw it up and then gone!
Last summer I was far from home in Louisville Kentucky and brought Ivy along. This is a series sharing snippets of places to see and things to do in Louisville, KY. There are fun pictures and doll size activities sprinkled throughout the series! I started this last fall and recently realized I didn’t finish, so I’m picking up where I left off!
I’m sharing links to all the other stops to make them easier for you to find your way around!
- Off to the Races (part 1)- Looking at the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
- A Victorian Stroll (part 2)-A lovely look at Louisville extensive Victorian Neighborhoods
- Mammoth Cave (part 3)- Visiting this National park with the longest cave system in the world!
Mammoth Caves
Today’s stop is to Mammoth Caves National Park.
It’s a trip south from Louisville, KY to nearby Mammoth Caves National Park. The 1 1/2 hour drive (90 miles) is well worth it to see the amazing park!
Mammoth Caves National Park
Fun Facts
- Longest cave system in the world.
- Over 400 miles of tunnel in the cave system.
- Saltpeter was mined in the cave around 1812 to make gunpowder to help the 1812 war effort.
- Regular tours of the cave have been available since the 1840’s
- Was used as a tuberculosis hospital in the 1800’s
Ivy is posing outside the natural entrance to the cave.
There are several options for different cave tours. The park has 12 miles of the 400+ miles of cave tunnels open to tours. There are also beautiful paths through the forest to enjoy.
Doll Size Finds
In the visitors center I kept my eye out for doll size souvenirs. I found a variety of fun souvenirs to share!
I have to give credit to my husband for spotting the doll size backpack at the visitors center!
I love that this little backpack says Mammoth Cave, Kentucky on the front!
With elastic straps it expands to fit Ivy.
A doll size hiking backpack or great for school supplies!
I also came across a pack of cave photos that are a great size for doll posters. They also had these mini bats by the register to raise awareness for the safety and health of the bats in the caves. The white one glows in the dark, cool!
Don’t forget this stop is included in our school project! Print off your own here if you missed it.
I loved the doll size finds from Mammoth Cave and I just might have picked up an extra something for an awesome reader! Do keep following along with our stops and I just might have a giveaway for my amazing readers sometime soon!

Mammoth Caves is such a great place to visit. We were just there last summer and did the historic tour. I would love to go back this summer and do one of the longer tours. I love the little doll-sized backpack you found!
